I can only take this local, in-season thing so far. I suppose with yesterday’s dusting of snow I should have been brewing hot tea and stirring homemade squash and apple soup, or some such thing. And really I would have if only I’d been able to clear my mind from visions of deep blue swimming pools, thick, historical-fiction-with-a few-bodices-thrown-in novels, and icy drinks with little umbrellas in them.
Yes, I will make hot tea. I will be a New Englander. I will embrace winter and buy some really ugly slippers. Yes, yes, yes. Squashhhhhhhh.
I tried. I really tried. But yesterday, the closest I could get to squash was the pure-sunshine yellow of a perfectly ripe mango. The kind of mango that bleeds sticky juice on to your hand as you peel it. The kind that fills the air with thick, almost dank sweetness.

Oh screw winter. Mango lassi anyone?
Here's the recipe. Leave the ice out if it is too much for you.
Ingredients:
One ripe mango, peel and cut into chunks
¾ cup plain yogurt (I use Stonyfield, fat-free yogurt)
1-2 tablespoons sugar, or 1 tablespoon honey (exactly how much sweetener depends on the sweetness of the mango
½ cup crushed ice (or maybe five ice cubes, depending on the size)
Dash of milk (maybe ¼ cup)
Very, very small pinch of ground cardamom (Don’t overdo this. The tiniest sprinkle will go a long way.)
Instructions:
Combine all the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Enjoy.
