Someone at work brought in a bag of these little orange ovals that smelled of Florida and tart sweetness and sunshine. They were so bright they almost glowed, reminding me of all the things that even if my office had windows, which it does not, I wouldn't be able to enjoy for another three or four months.
The folks at work can make a platter of stale chocolate chip cookies disappear faster than you can say "snow emergency," but I guess the idea of popping a piece of fruit in your mouth peel and all freaked them out or something. So the little orange guys in their red mesh bags sat. And sat, and sat, and sat.
My friend Azra and I ate several of them for a mid-afternoon snack, but at the end of the day most of the fruit was still there, untouched. As I was getting ready to leave, Azra came over and gave me one of the bags to take home. So this week as freezing rain coated my driveway and even my bath wouldn't run hot enough to take the chill out of my bones, I've had this little bowl of sunshine on my counter. And every now and again, I wander over and pop one into my mouth. Hold it there. And dream.

The same thing happened in my office, too, but in this case it was a pint of gooseberries. To my surprise, no one had ever seen them before. That you had to remove their papery covering made them even more suspect.
