There are some marriages where the spouses are interchangeable, but mine isn't one of them. He is laundry. I am scrubbing. He is anything with a hammer. I am most things with a grocery cart.
In the kitchen, I cook. He bakes. Period.
Baking makes no sense to me. All those rules and rolling things around. And it is dusty. And mostly, I'm no good at it.
These days, there is little time for things like homemade biscuits, but there they were the other morning as I wandered out of the bedroom, hair askew and eyes still blurry. And sitting on the kitchen table was the trifecta of domestic bliss: a newspaper, a cup of coffee and biscuits. Golden, fluffy, flake-apart biscuits.
The funny part is that for reasons involving blood sugar and waistlines, I didn't eat any of the biscuits. But I enjoyed them all the same. There was someone in my life who made biscuits. And a warm kitchen and the smell of coffee and fresh baking.
I felt plenty full.

Biscuit tips:
I have no idea what is necessary, and what is just for fun, but here is how I make biscuits:
It's probably just my inner engineer, but I do sift the dry ingredients together, and I have a pastry cutter. I cut in the maximum amount of butter allowed (and maybe a bit more) to the dry ingredients. Then I add the milk, and mix with a spoon just enough to grab the blob by hand. Then, I pound it flat, then fold it over and repeat until I've lost interest. If it gets too wet, it sticks to everything. When that happens, I stick my hand in flour so it doesn't stick to my hands, and after I do that a few times, it stops sticking to the bowl too. Finally, I slice it up and put it on the sheet to cook.
